Alamance County, NC was once known for its furniture, textile and dairy industries, however, most of these industries are now gone. Currently, the largest employer in Alamance County is Laboratory Corporation of America, a biomedical testing firm, headquartered in Burlington. Because of the county's low property tax rate, it has attracted residents who work in Durham, Orange and Guilford Counties. The largest city in the Alamance County is Burlington, located in the western part of the county. Other cities include Graham (the county seat) and Mebane. Outside these cities, small communities dot the rolling countryside. In the south central portion of the county near Snow Camp, the Cane Creek Mountains rise to an elevation of about 900 ft. Bass Mountain, a peak in the Cane Creek Mountains, hosts an annual bluegrass festival. Hiking and water activities are found along the Haw River which runs through the county. Alamance County is served by one school district – the Burlington-Alamance School District.
City of Burlington
Burlington, the largest city in Alamance County, grew up as a textile mills city. Most of the textile industry is now gone. Currently, the largest employer is Laboratory Corporation of America, a biomedical testing firm, with headquarters in Burlington. An Amtrak station located on North Main Street connects Burlington with the northeast corridor cities and with Charlotte. Burlington is the home to many parks and recreational facilities that border the Haw River and its tributaries. The city is also known for its many fine restaurants. The City of Burlington is served by two large shopping malls and many small specialty stores.
City of Mebane
The City of Mebane is located mostly in Alamance County (although a portion of the city is in Orange County). The downtown area houses many historic homes and sites including the long abandoned White Furniture Company which is currently undergoing renovations to house modern loft apartments. The community hosts a variety of events including a Dogwood festival, Autumn festival, Christmas parade and various music and social venues throughout the year. Tanger Outlet Mall to the south of Mebane is a shopper's paradise.City of Graham
Graham is a small city in the center of Alamance County sandwiched between Burlington on the west and Haw River on the east. It is the county seat of Alamance County. It has two historic districts - the Courthouse Square and the North Main Street Historic District. In addition to the county offices, Graham is also home to Alamance County Community College.Haw River and Green Level
Haw River and Green Level are small communities sandwiched between Burlington and Mebane in Alamance County. Like many other locations in Alamance County, Haw River began as a mill community on the banks of the Haw River.Saxapahaw
Saxapahaw is a small community in south central Alamance County. Originally a mill community on the Haw River, the town faded away when the mill closed. Recently, the old mill buildings have been renovated into loft apartments and businesses. Newly opened venues include the Haw River Ballroom, the Saxapahaw General Store, Eddy Pub. and farmer's market and music series during the summer. Swepsonville is a small community located south of Mebane near the Haw River. Honda Motor Company maintains a plant in Swepsonville where general purpose engines and a variety of consumer items are manufactured. The Haw River Hiking Trail runs along the river just outside of town.Snow Camp
Snow Camp is a small community located in south central Alamance county in the valley of Cane Creek Mountains. Snow Camp is home to the Snow Camp Theatre which presents historical dramas in an amphitheater.
